We just learned of an 8th grade student, Grace Johnson, who was inspired by the Sharps and made them the subject of her National History Day Project! Here is a link to her wonderful (and extensive) project!
Below is a note from her mother, Debby, to librarian, Holly Snyder of Brown University.
UPDATE: Grace won first place in the South Dakota National History Day competition and is headed to the national competition!
Holly,
Thank you so much for the information on the Sharps. My daughter, Grace, is an 8th grader at Memorial Middle School in Sioux Falls, SD. In her accelerated Social Studies class, they created works for the National History Day competition. The national theme was "Taking a Stand". After viewing the PBS documentary by Ken Burns, Grace chose the Sharps as her focus in her individual website. During her interview portion of the competition, she was asked for the location of the Sharp Family Archives, I see from your correspondence that these are located at Brown University. Thank you for the information that you sent. This Wednesday, Grace will compete at the state level of competition in the Jr. level of NHD. If she advances, she will bring her Sharp website to Washington DC in June - fingers crossed! I thought you might be interested in seeing her website. It is built quite differently than the one you have online as she is only allowed 1200 of her own words, and is dependent on first and secondary accounts of the Sharps journey. If she advances on - I will let you know! Again thank you for your information!
